We've pretty much beaten to death the idea that every business needs to buy a domain name, create a website, and write a blog to help establish their online brand, but what about individuals? With how important the internet is in today's business world, I feel like everyone should have a personal website set up to act as their online identity. Sure you can use LinkedIn or Facebook, but those platforms are incredibly limiting, and they make you look just like everyone else. You really need your own dedicated website.
But there's one little problem: most people don't know how to make websites. Even if you know how, it might not be worth the effort. You could always start a blog on a site like Wordpress, but that doesn't really help if you can't spend the time it takes writing regular posts. So what do you do?
Flavors.me is what you do. Flavors.me is a service that lets you make a very simple website about yourself. They have found the perfect balance between ease of use (so you can set up your site in minutes) and flexibility (so you can personalize the site to fit your personal style). It really couldn't be any easier. Here's how it works:
- Sign up: Create a free account on their signup page
- Add content: After you sign up, you'll be taken straight to your new site which you can start editing right away. The way flavors.me works, you don't actually enter info into the site (other than a short title and "about" paragraph). Instead, you include content from other sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or a blog. This way you don't even need to maintain your flavors site.
- Pick a design: Flavors.me really only has a few design options, but you can make a really slick site. Just pick a layout (there are only three options) and a color scheme and you're done.
- Use your own domain (optional): This feature costs $20/year so you don't have to do it, but I think it's easily worth the money. You can buy a domain name like YourName.com and host your flavors website there to make the site look much more professional and personalized.
That's really all there is to it. To see an example of one of these sites, here's one I just set up for myself in about five minutes. It's nothing fancy, but there's no easier way to set up a credible web presence for yourself.
So if you don't already have a personal website, you should really give flavors.me a shot. You'd be surprised how helpful a personal website can be, and how easy it can be to set one up.
