The small features you'd miss if they weren't there
Nobody buys a car because of the cupholders. You probably didn't ask about them on the test drive, and they're not in the commercials. But if you got in a car and there was nowhere to put your coffee, you'd notice right away!
A lot of software features work the same way. They're not the big, exciting additions that get announced with fanfare. They're the small things that make everyday work feel smoother, and that you'd miss if they were gone. We call those cupholder features.
Why we set aside a whole week
This year, our main focus has been making Less Annoying CRM more intuitive and easier to use, rather than adding more to it. Cupholder features fit right into that. They don't add new things to learn. They make the things you already do every day a little nicer.
Customers send us ideas like this all the time, and they're often small enough that they could keep getting pushed behind bigger projects. So we gave them a week of their own.
We're able to spend a whole week this way because Less Annoying CRM is bootstrapped, which means we don't take investor money. There's no one asking us to chase the next big thing, and our customers are the only people we answer to. So when lots of you ask for the same small improvement, we get to go build it!
How the week worked
We looked for projects that hit a sweet spot: things customers ask for again and again, that our developers could build in a single week. What was left was a list of features lots of you wanted, all small enough to finish by the end of the week.
Each developer took one project to focus on. If someone finished early, they picked up more, so the week got as much done as it could.
We also got a head start on something bigger. It's one of the most requested projects on our list, and it won't be ready for a while yet, but I'm excited to share more about it when it's closer!
Every feature on the list started with a customer telling us what would make their CRM better. If you've ever emailed us an idea, there's a good chance it was part of the conversation. Thank you!
The first one is live
The first Cupholder Week feature to launch lets you filter contact and company history by activity type. Click All activity above the history on any contact or company, switch activity types on or off, and save the setup you like best.
More Cupholder Week features are on the way. We'll share each one as it launches, so keep an eye on our newsletter.
Shaking things up
A cupholder needs something to hold, so we wrapped up the week with a milkshake party. The menu had strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, and cookies and cream, plus a wildcard: Oreo and caramel. I was partial to the strawberry.
It was a fun way to celebrate a week of small wins, and a good reminder of why we build these features in the first place: they're the things you reach for every day without thinking about it.
